Besides CBD there are more than a hundred other cannabinoids that can be found in cannabis plants. Cannabinoids are substances that were at first only found in plants of the cannabis family. Later these substances were also found in some other plant species, and even in the human body. The cannabinoids that occur naturally in the human body are called endocannabinoids. The endocannabinoid system is a relatively recent discovery made by scientists. Further research has shown that endocannabinoids are involved in many important bodily processes, such as regulating appetite, balancing of energy, metabolism and sleep. Cannabinoids also appear to play a role in all kinds of psychological processes such as stress, anxiety, emotions, pain, memory and reward. One particular example of this is the so-called runners high. For years it was thought that this relaxed and pain-free feeling that runners get (after running for a considerable amount of time) was caused by endorphins. Recent research has shown that it is actually an endocannabinoid that causes the pleasant experience of the runners high. The name of this endocannabinoid is adenosine.
At this point you might ask why anyone would take in cannabinoids while the body already produces cannabinoids for itself? That’s a good question, especially when one doesn’t have any physical or psychological problems. However, if someone is suffering from certain complaint, it is possible that the endocannabinoid system is out of balance in one way or another. You can compare this with, for example, a patient suffering from diabetes. By taking insulin this patient brings his blood sugar level at the correct level again. In the same way certain problems may arise from an unbalanced endocannabinoid system. By taking CBD (or other cannabinoids) it may be possible to complement what your body is missing and restore the balance. Furthermore, cannabinoids are also taken preventively, against inflammation for example.
The endocannabinoid system has not been discovered very long ago, and scientists still have many questions. For some conditions there are more indications that CBD might have a beneficial effect than for others. On this website we strive to inform you on the evidence of the research to date, and what indications there are that CBD is useful for your condition.
